Vidal Sassoon (17 January 1928 – 9 May 2012) was a revolutionary man in the hair industry who inspired trends for decades.

British hairstylist, businessman, and philanthropist, he was know for creating simple and geometric haircuts influenced by the Bauhaus movement of his peers in architecture. Sassoon’s taste for strong, clean lines and shapes influenced the hairstyles he’d become famous for: the Five-Point cut, the Geometric Bob and the Pixie.

Sassoon was born into a Jewish family in Hammersmith, London, and lived in Shepherd’s Bush. His father abandoned the family for another woman when Sassoon was three years old. Due to poverty as a single parent, his mother placed Sassoon and his younger brother, Ivor, in a Jewish orphanage where they stayed for seven years until Vidal was 11 year old, when his mother remarried.

Coming from a home of extreme poverty was his mother who suggested to him to become an apprentice hairdresser after he quit school at the age of 14 during WWII. After partitioning at a salon in London, Vidal first opened his own hair salon at 108 New Bond Street in 1954. “I made up my mind”, said Sassoon, “that if I was going to be in hairdressing long-term, I wanted to change things.”

After developing a great reputation for his innovative cuts, Vidal moved to Los Angeles in the early 1970s, where he opened the first chain of worldwide hairstyling salons, complemented by a line of his very own hair-treatment products. He also co-founded Paul Mitchell Systems with Paul Mitchell, one of his former students. By then, he was already the most famous hairstylist in history.

Vidal Sassoon The Movie was released in 2010 to great reviews. For Vidal, hair cutting meant design and elevating hair to new fashion level. He was and will always be the blueprint of modern hairdressing.
